UGANDA NATIONAL WILDLIFE RESERVES

The government has set aside various [laces to help protect and reserve these creatures. Reserves have been put in place and among them are the following.
KATONGA WILDLIFE RESERVE
Along the banks of the Katonga river in western Uganda is the Katonga wildlife reserve which is about 211 sqkm. Many of the species of plants and animals in the reserve are unique to its wetland environment. This reserve is also named after river Katonga which flows from Lake Victoria in the east to Lake George in the west.
Katonga wildlife reserve is located both in Kamwenge and Ibanda districts found in the western part of Uganda bordering Biguli Sub County in Kamenge and part of Mpara Sub County in Kyenjojo district. It is about 200 km west of Kampala city by road.
This reserves vegetation is mixed savannah with acacia shrubland or woodlands whereas a huge portion of the reserve is either seasonal or permanent wetlands with forest of tropical and riverine.
Katonga hosts over 150 bird species and over 40 mammals like waterbucks, bushbucks, elephants, otter, and reedbucks. This reserve is best explored by a river canoe or foot.
This reserve is famous for mammals like elephants, antelopes and buffalos plus walking and canoe safaris.
BUDONGO FOREST RESERVE
This national reserve is found in Murchison Park in the western part of Uganda and it hosts over 800 mammals. Budongo forest is a home to the largest population of the great apes in Uganda and is also a perfect place to view other primates like the red tailed monkeys, black and white colobus. Birds, butterflies plus nocturnal animals like many galago species and potto are also present with large numbers of elephants and buffalos that come to the reserve from the neighboring Murchison Park.
This therefore makes this national reserve a hot spot for large chimp populations, apes, forest walks and birding though chimp tracking is not done here.
