Kisoro district was first known as Bufumbira County and was part of Kabale district. It has 13 sub counties and four parliamentary constituencies; Bufumbira south, east, north and Bufumbira Women’s representatives.

Like most districts in the country, agriculture is te backbone of Kisoro’s economy. Crops like sorghum, sweat potatoes, Irish potatoes and maize among others are grown in this district. Residents also keep livestock on a subsistence level with afew having large cattle farms. Kisoro district is blessed with tourist’s sites that have led to its development like Mgahinga gorilla national park. This park is a home to primates like mount gorillas, and also covers three of the eight Virunga volcanoes; Muhabura, Sabyinyo,and Gahinga all of which lie on the Uganda Rwanda border. One of the countries famous national parks is found in this district. Bwindi impenetrable forest National Park which is famous for the mountain gorillas.
