Queen Elizabeth national park is situated in western Uganda stretching up to 764 square miles through districts of Busheyi, Rukungiri and Kasese with the largest portion found within Busheyi. The park regarded as the ‘Medley of Wonders’ is Uganda’s most popular park named after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II after it was first opened in 1954. The main attraction in the park in the Kazinga Channel, a 32 km water channel linking lakes Edward and Gorge which has the highest density of hippos in Africa .Other popular spots to explore in the park include the Ishasha sector where you can see tree climbing lions, katwe salt mines plus numerous crate lakes.
The park is home to a variety of mammals and birds including over 5000 hippos, elephants, buffalos, warthogs, lions, topi, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, leopard, serval cats among others.  Tourists interested in tracking chimpanzees or any other primates can visit Maramagambo forest or cross over to the neighboring Kigezi & Kyambura game reserves.  Birds to look out for include the Palmnut vulture, Long-crested eagle, Martial eagle, Crowned plover, African crake, Bateluer, Flappet lark, Black headed gonolek,  weaver birds, raptors, Nightjars, Nubian woodpecker, swallows among others.

A self drive safari to Queen Elizabeth park is a 387 km road trip from Kampala using the Masaka road and then connecting to Mbarara-Kasese road- Journey lasts about 5 hour and 16 minutes.
